Trainers who say “Some dogs don’t respond to positive reinforcement” are telling on themselves.
You’ve heard it before, used as a lazy justification for force, fear, and punishment in training.
But every animal responds to reinforcement. That’s not up for debate.
If a dog isn’t engaging, it’s not because positive training “doesn’t work”- it’s because the trainer hasn’t successfully tapped into what truly motivates them.
Instead of adjusting to the dog, some trainers double down on outdated methods like shock, choke, prong, or intimidation, because it’s easier to force compliance than to understand behavior.
But here’s the reality: millions of dogs are trained every day without pain or fear, using a variety of reinforcers beyond just food - things like play, and even the environment itself.
The idea that some dogs need to be hurt to learn is as outdated as the dominance myths that prop it up.
That’s not to say force is never used in handling dogs, but there’s a difference between reacting to an emergency and calling it training.
If a dog bolts into traffic, you might need to grab them. If they’re attacking another dog, you may have to physically intervene. But what does that have to do with teaching?
Training should prepare dogs for the world in a way that minimizes those moments, not normalize force as part of learning.
The trainers clinging to aversive methods aren’t just unethical; they’re falling behind. The science doesn’t support them. The most credentialed behavior experts condemn them.
And the rest of us? We’ve moved on.

What are they really defending?
When trainers go to war for aversive methods, when they double down on pain, fear, and intimidation, what are they actually fighting for?
It’s not results. We’ve known for decades that these methods create more stress, more fear, and more behavioral fallout.
It’s not about what’s best for dogs, either. The most experienced, credentialed professionals in this field and every behavioral science organization on earth have rejected force-based training because of what it does to dogs long-term.
So what’s left?
Control. Power. The feeling of domination.
That’s what’s really being defended here, not effective training, not the well-being of dogs, just the ego boost that comes from making something obey.
But here’s the reality: Wallace, my current co-star, is a working dog navigating a city environment and others with confidence, focus, and ZERO force.
No shock, no prongs, no intimidation, just skill, preparation, and an understanding of what dogs actually need.
Because at the end of the day, violence doesn’t make you strong, understanding does.
