Their decision to delete the video came after the nationâs largest rescue group called it âabhorrentâ and warned that anyone who copied their behaviour would risk severe injury.
The NSW-based travellers advertised their DIY six-step video as a âfoolproof processâ to avoid expensive wildlife parks. The video shows the man using his âsecretâ trick to coax the koala down, before warning viewers to stand by in case of attack and then shows the woman gaining âclose contactâ and petting the animal.
Yahoo News has opted not to describe the method used in the video, as it can induce stress in koalas.
The couple behind the stunt told Yahoo News they âwere just playing aroundâ.
At least three experts were familiar with the specific methods used to engage with the wild koala, saying it was only ever used as a last resort to capture sick or injured animals. The video was removed after Yahoo News advised the couple of the concerns raised by WIRES.
While koalas are not as dangerous as venomous snakes or crocodiles, they are able to inflict devastating wounds. And thatâs a key reason Dr Tania Bishop, the head vet at WIRES animal rescue service, was troubled by the influencer coupleâs video.
She said, âItâs step one, step two, step three. It looks very much like theyâre trying to show people a method of summoning a wild koala and to me, thatâs the most horrifying thing. Why would you post something like that?â
Thereâs one particular moment in the clip, when Bishop believes the woman risked being scalped by the koala. She said, âWhen sheâs taking a selfie, if that koala was frightened of her being in its way and in its territory⊠thereâs every reason it could have dug [its] teeth or claws into her head.â
In Victoria, where the video was filmed, interfering with a koala without a permit can carry a fine of up to $46,154 and/or two years in jail.

Despite being only three weeks into this yearâs season, a majority of participants have already revealed whether or not theyâre still with their TV partner.
Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle about her loose-lipped co-stars, Jamie admits itâs âquite disappointingâ that so many brides and grooms have essentially spoiled the show for viewers.
She said, âIf someone does choose to go against whatâs recommended, thatâs on them. To me, I watched MAFS [in previous years] and it was so devastating when youâd find out that someone isnât together, because it kind of ruins it.â
Jamie added, âI think people should not only honour their own journey, but honour the viewerâs journey as well. And I think everyone can keep it in their pants for a couple of months. Just honestly, keep it in your pants⊠Youâll be fine!â

According to space authorities, the likelihood of Asteroid 2024 YR4 striking Earth in 2032 has grown from around 1% to over 2%. The impact could cause an eight-megaton explosion akin to a small nuclear bomb, with some dubbing it a âcity killerâ.
Monash University astronomer Associate Professor Dr Michael Brown said the asteroid has the potential to be locally devastating if it hit a populated area, âbut itâs not a civilisation-destroying or an extinction of the dinosaurs-sized asteroid.â
His prediction is in line with NASAâs, which has said the asteroid has âa very small chance of Earth impactâ and would only cause âlocalised damageâ if it struck.
However, Brown notes thereâs a more sobering problem humankind is facing that will be much more destructive.
He said, âClimate change is already having impacts. It will cause more global damage and claim more lives than this asteroid ever will. So a sense of perspective is definitely needed.â
