We're the official channel of UNSW Sydney, a brilliantly located university between the coast and the city.
UNSW Sydney is one of Australia's leading research and teaching universities. We're a welcoming community, promoting lasting knowledge and creating an academic environment where outstanding students and scholars from around the world can be inspired to excel in their programs of study and research.
As drone and remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) flights continue to increase, the potential benefits they can make to a range of industries grows too.
Josh Orr, the first student of UNSW's Bachelor of Aviation (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) degree, patrols Dee Why beach from the air, watching for sharks, rips and swimmers in distress. Surf Life Saving NSW conducts these drone patrols on 50 locations along the NSW coastline throughout the school holidays.

High-dimensional quantum systems are a valuable resource for quantum information processing.
Powerful encodings include ‘Schrödinger cat’ states, superpositions of widely displaced coherent states, which also embody the challenge of quantum effects at the large scale. Researchers at UNSW Sydney have recently demonstrated the creation and manipulation of Schrödinger cat states using the spin-7/2 nucleus of a single antimony atom.

Scientists from UNSW Sydney are working on technology that can predict which beaches and on what days bluebottles will wash ashore.
Using wind and swell forecasts, knowledge about this curious creature's anatomy and lots of complicated maths that oceanography brings with it, the scientists are building a tool that can make the likelihood of picking a beach with bluebottles more than just a matter of (bad) luck.
Still in its testing phase, the plan is to include the prediction tool in Surf Life Saving Australia's app, Beachsafe, when next summer rolls around.

Researchers at the Tyree Foundation Institute of Health Engineering (Tyree IHealthE) recently designed and created a patient-based anatomical 3D model of a young child’s skull which helped surgeons devise and plan an innovative way of successfully removing a life-threatening tumour.
The team also recreated an exact replica of a specific patient’s trachea (windpipe) to help clinicians determine whether a certain surgical procedure could be performed safely.
Now the team are considering ways to make future 3D prints even more useful for medical professionals, by developing the use of different printing materials that recreate the complex way body parts feel and move.

Have you ever wondered why astronauts return from the space station weak and struggling to walk? Kate Poole dives into the physiological challenges faced by astronauts during and after their missions. She explores the effects of microgravity on the human body, including muscle atrophy and bone density loss. Poole highlights the cutting-edge research and innovative solutions being developed to mitigate these issues, so that astronauts can withstand long-duration spaceflights. She highlights the need for long term planning to achieve these goals and draws parallels between space medicine and fundamental research into how our bodies function.
Associate Professor Kate Poole
Associate Professor Kate Poole is the Director of Research in the School of Biomedical Sciences at UNSW Medicine & Health. Her research seeks to understand how the cells that make up our bodies respond to the forces around them. She is currently investigating what happens to our cells under low gravity conditions to better understand how long-term space travel will impact human performance.

Embark on a journey into the labyrinth of the human brain with Genevra Hart, as she reveals the staggering complexity of our neural networks. Within the billions of dense microscopic neural connections that make up the brain, Hart isolates the importance of dopamine in controlling our thoughts and actions. Drawing from her research on decision-making, she illuminates the pivotal role of dopamine in refining our choices, and creating habits. With a focus on potential treatments for addictions, Hart advocates for advanced techniques such as deep brain stimulation. This exploration underscores the endless possibilities of neuroscience and its impact on our lives.
Dr Genevra Hart
Dr Genevra Hart is a lecturer in the School of Psychology at UNSW Science. Her work investigates how the brain controls decision-making, by guiding our choices towards current goals. While this function sounds simple it becomes challenging when our goals don’t align with ingrained habits. When the brain is in conflict between choosing new goals or old habits, specific neural processes need to be engaged to drive goal-directed choices, and these are the processes thought to be disrupted in addictions. She has published over 20 papers on this topic, which have been cited over 900 times.
