Here's a quick bushcraft tip on sawing wood with a bow saw. Good for cutting small pieces of wood fast.
Episode 2 of Shelters of Britain sees me sleep in a log cabin hidden in the Dorset countryside, with its own private lake. I go hunting for 140 million year old fossils by the coast, and go fishing in the lake. I spend the night in this log cabin, cook good food and chill with my dog Jaxx.

The timber was sourced from a local forest in Oakhampton. The Cabin features 8 large panels of glass each tailor cut to fit perfectly into the frames. The mezzanine floor and staircase were a unique challenge. A complete t ree trunk was used for the staircase, with a half moon shape at the top so that it would fit flush against the floor. The steps are made from solid oak, and African Hardwood was incorporated inot the handrail and mezzanine beams. Much of the oak that was used in the cabin was salvaged from one of the great storms years ago. The floorboards on the mezzanine were reclaimed timber. The woodstove was installed on a Welsh slate hearth. And the sliding door to the bathroom is handmade from Oak in Poland. The cabin overlooks a natural lake that has been fished very little, allowing the fish to thrive and grow to a decent size. Years ago, Canadian goslings were introduced to the lake and now each spring they return to raise their chicks.

I sleep in this rustic tiny house built by an artisan carpenter. The cabin has over 1,000 chestnut tiles on the roof, each individually hand cut. I get the cabin warm with the woodstove, and spend the night in there with my dog Jaxx.

I decided to head to the woods for some solo early winter camping with no sleeping bag or tent. I make a basic shelter, build a raised bed and sleep on a reindeer hide. I get a fire going and cook spit roast partridge. As night draws in and temperatures get cold I build up the fire and get ready to spend a cold winter night under the stars.

The Ragworm 🪱”Hediste Diversicolor”. It lives in the muddy seabeds of our UK shores. It’s pretty freaky looking, not too disimilar to a millipede. They hunt by making a net of mucus at the entrance to their burrows which catches plankton and other small food particles. If they don’t get much food, they venture out of their burrows in search of bigger food. They are normally brown but males go bright green during breeding season. Hence the name “Diversicolor”. Their “teeth” are made of a very tough lightweight material, unlike bone and tooth enamel, it is not mineralised with calcium, but formed by a rich protein with bound zinc ions. Many believe further research into this could lead to applications in the engineering world. Aside from that - they are a really good bait for fishing! #worm #fishing
