This is an introductory video consisting of highlights and interviews with participants and the organising team of the ‘Sony Assistive Musical Instrument Hackathon In partnership with Paraorchestra, Drake Music, Watershed and MyWorld’ held in Bristol, UK from 22nd to 24th September 2024.
This hackathon was organised by Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., working with Sony Group to develop ‘Yuru Musical Instruments’ (“Yuru” in Japanese meaning free, generous, flexible, and approachable, amongst a range of other nuanced meanings) that are accessible to all, with below UK partners.
Drake Music: National arts charity in the UK have been pioneering the use of "accessible music technology", technology that makes it easier for everyone to use and engage in musical activities regardless of disability
Paraorchestra : Inclusive orchestra group consisting of musicians with and without disabilities based in Bristol
Watershed : An independent cinema and creative technology centre on Bristol, operates the Pervasive Media Studio,the venue of this event.
MyWorld : Creative technology programme in the UK’s West of England region funded from UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Strength in Places Fund (SIPF)
From the Sony Group, technologists and designers in Europe and Japan have gathered.
Using the principles of the Social Model of Disability and Co-Design, they have collaborated with musicians from Paraorchestra, and UK-based technologists on the development of innovative instruments that were suitable for a range of accessibility requirements.
