Even though the baby from Zoo de La Palmyre has some bald patches, it doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s quite cute with his great big ears. He looks at me by the window and then goes off to play with the other baby. The other female baby takes a moment to look at the reflections and then continues playing. She goes back to the patchy baby, who is lying on a sheet. She tries to push him off the sheet to get to it, but then just jumps on top of him. The female looks at the camera again but gets pulled back by the patchy one.
You can see the adults grooming in the background and that they have some hair loss as well. The babies play until the adult male comes to grab the patchy baby and pulls him to the back. He manages to free himself and runs off, with the older female baby chasing after him. She grabs a foot of the patchy baby and pulls his leg. The baby comes close to the window for a second and then carries on playing.
I reached out to Palmyre Zoo to ask about the troops, particularly why there are so many hairless chimpanzees and whether it is due to alopecia. It's rare to receive a response, but this time I heard back from Florence Perroux. She kindly helped me correct parts of my descriptions and answered my questions, which I greatly appreciated. She wrote:
📝Translated with google: "No alopecia as written, but simply a bit of over-grooming by two females, particularly when the group is indoors for extended periods due to low outdoor temperatures (or during more 'disruptive' periods, such as when a new individual has just been introduced into the group, which was the case when you recorded your videos). This results in 'plucked' areas of the body for some individuals (including one of the two young ones). Furthermore, spending time indoors during winter often impacts the coat of great apes housed in zoos due to reduced sunlight.
Partial and occasional observations do not allow behaviours to be interpreted with certainty. A lot of observation time and data are needed to understand the overall social dynamics of a group, especially with chimpanzees, where dynamics regularly change.
We are, in fact, working with a specialised research office to improve the well-being of our animals and adapt their management based on the challenges we encounter. We also regularly host ethology interns who conduct multi-month studies on topics such as feeding behaviours or social dynamics within our different groups."
Original text:

Gorilla Xetsa has an unusual way of eating her bell pepper. She splits the pepper, discards what we’d consider the good part, eats around the stem and seeds, and then discards the seed as well. She cleans her next pepper on her arm and repeats the process. After collecting more bell peppers, she continues this routine before walking off.
Silverback Viatu, a fuzzy silverback, enjoys a German turnip (Kohlrabi) and cucumbers. He peels the cucumbers, bites the tops off, and eats only the flesh, discarding the rest. Even though a lot of food gets discarded, it all gets eaten in the end, either by the gorillas or the mangabeys who come to finish it off. It’s nice for them to be able to choose what they like, especially after such a buffet (https://youtu.be/lPwT0ALmXy4).
This compilation was filmed in September 2024.

*Bonobo baby falls face-first towards concrete, but Mum's quick reflexes save the day. Watch how she heroically catches her little one in time to prevent injury.*
This is one of the bonobo ape group from the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. Sadly the babies seem to suffer from overgrooming, but that doesn't take away from how adorable they are. Just look at the little one's face! Not just the first baby, but the second one as well, who is smaller. The older baby is already practising the all-too-familiar sight between bonobos—G-G rubbing (explained more at the end).
The greatest moment was when I witnessed Mum saving the baby from serious injury. What a star mum with her quick reaction. The baby climbed on his mum's back, standing up and trying to grab the rope. But the baby missed and fell face-first towards a concrete rock. Mum’s quick reaction saved the little one as she grabbed him just before he hit the rock. What helped was that the little one had hold of Mum’s back hair and didn’t let go during the fall. A scary moment, but Mum saved the day.
Genital-genital (GG) rubbing is a well-documented social behaviour among bonobos, primarily observed between females, though it can occur in other pairings. This unique behaviour serves several important purposes:
Social Bonding: GG rubbing strengthens social relationships and bonds within the group. It helps to build trust and cooperation, especially between unrelated individuals.
Conflict Resolution: Bonobos use this behaviour as a way to diffuse tension or resolve conflicts. Instead of engaging in aggression, they redirect their energy towards affiliative actions like GG rubbing.
Alliance Building: In some cases, GG rubbing helps to form alliances, particularly among females, to maintain their dominance over males or to access resources like food.
Stress Relief: GG rubbing may reduce stress and reinforce a sense of group harmony, which is important for bonobos, as their social systems emphasise peace and cooperation.

Sprout showcases her sustainable fashion sense with a cardboard hat that's both chic and unique. Meanwhile, Joe's playful antics take a wild turn with a slobber attack and some energetic wrestling. When Joe tries to get up close for the perfect shot, it's clear that one orangutan isn't enough for the camera. Jazz steps in to restore order, especially when Jim tries to claim a stick for himself.
The action keeps rolling as Jim attempts to grab the stick with some impressive falling style. Jazz, ready for a nap, still watches over the boys, who remain full of energy as their wrestling match continues. Sprout eventually decides it's time to leave, but the boys don’t slow down and dive back into their mischievous ways.
Jazz retreats to the back for some peace, but the boys follow, still hyped up. And when Joe tries for a sneaky piggyback ride, Jazz’s soft leg kick ensures his plan doesn't quite work, adding a humorous yet subtle touch to the playful interactions.
