The original poem does not specify who it is written for as the poet leaves its interpretation to the reader. In this rendering, the one being referred to is a person's good deeds and what life has looked like with its absence.

As one verse beautifully describes it: "If you disbelieve, then Allah is truly not in need of you...But if you become grateful, He will appreciate that from you" (39:7)
