The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals. The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model. Both organizations are wholly supported by auto insurers and insurance associations. IIHS runs vehicle crash tests and other evaluations at our state-of-the-art Vehicle Research Center. Consumers can use IIHS crash test, crash avoidance, and headlight ratings to compare vehicles when shopping for the safest car, minivan, SUV, or pickup truck.

IIHS news release • February 12, 2025
Automakers make big strides in front crash prevention
Automakers are delivering major improvements in their automatic emergency braking systems following the introduction of a tougher front crash prevention evaluation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety last year.
“The rapid progress manufacturers have made to improve these vital crash avoidance systems is impressive,” IIHS President David Harkey said. “Vehicles that excel in this new test will save lives, as it addresses the most dangerous kinds of front-to-rear crashes.”
Twenty-two of the latest 30 vehicles evaluated earn a good or acceptable rating, which requires systems to be able to prevent or substantially mitigate crashes at higher speeds. In April, only three out of the first 10 small SUVs tested performed to that level.

The 2025 Toyota Tundra crew cab notched a very solid performance in the IIHS updated moderate overlap crash test, with only one downgrade related to driver leg/foot injury risk. This was not enough to bring down its overall rating from good.
While many vehicles struggle with protecting the rear seated occupant in this test configuration, the Tundra had no issues there with good performance in all categories related to the rear occupant.

The clothing that makes pedestrians stand out to human drivers may make them invisible to automated crash prevention systems, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety suggests.
The new study investigated the effects of conspicuous clothing and increased roadway lighting on the performance of the pedestrian automatic emergency braking systems installed in three 2023 models — a Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester.
David Kidd, a senior research engineer at IIHS, discusses the results of the recent research tests. Learn more: https://go.iihs.org/news-conspicuity
