Rethinking this traditional kitchen is what designer Shaunn Lipsey aimed to do. Her goal was to bring the closed-off kitchen from the back of the house to the front, plus update the overall style and layout to suit the family’s needs. Including adding a custom sofa. “What I really wanted to do was bring the kitchen to the front of the home and connect it to the eating area”.

Designer Karin Bennett takes us inside her clients’ lakehouse that’s packed with neutral elements and plenty of texture. Starting in the entrance, dark muddy green built-in cabinets are reminiscent of the pine trees outside, while wood ceilings, exposed beams and a stone fireplace in the living room nod to the neutral setting. The open-concept main floor was designed to keep the focus on the lake view, with soft, low-profile furnishings.

“I wanted to show how a modern house can be warm,” says designer Brian Gluckstein. Located in Oakville, Ont., his latest Princess Margaret Home Lottery showhome boasts 7,172-square-feet of modern luxury. Favouring a taupey-grey brick exterior, the bronze screen on the outside offers privacy, diffusing the view looking in. Inside, the look is light and airy with the showstopper being the living room’s dramatic, two-storey window. Black lacquered archways lead into each room. The back of the house uses an open plan design and features the kitchen, breakfast room, office and family room with a double-sided fireplace. Some notable design moments is the kitchen with its soft green fluted island and concealed appliances, the dining room’s luxe banquet, the wood grained wallpaper in the office and the basement’s sophisticated movie/gym space.

“When it comes to design, it’s all about storytelling,” says architect Gianpiero Pugliese, co-principal of Audax with interior designer Mariya Naumov. Their classic kitchen design was influenced by Vermeer art and the Dutch aesthetic, including marble checkered floors, Tudor panelling and plenty of antiques.
