I believe a holistic marriage of Traditional Irish Music and Contemporary Electronica can express a unique perspective on modern Irish identity. I want to create in an Irish context what has been created by the likes of Meitei (Japan), Lauten Der Scheele (Germany), Lucrezia Dalt (Columbia), Proc Fiskal (Scotland) and Debit (Mexico) — a passionate conversation between tradition and innovation.
The EP ‘An Todhchaí’ is the first part of this experiment. Its 3 tracks — ‘An Caoineadh’ (The Crying), ‘An Grá’ (The Love) and ‘An Todhchaí’ (The Future) — pose sonic ‘what-if?’ questions about traditional-electronic interaction. ‘An Caoineadh’ is a party, the production unapologetically bombastic, the instrumentation uncannily traditional, samples taken from friends drunkenly imitating RTÉ newscasters at a festival on Inis Oírr. ‘An Grá’ is a tongue-in-cheek send up of our love affair with alcohol over an intense, intricate Bass workout. ‘An Todhchaí’ is both celebration and provocation, a Footwork / Set Dance amalgamation that recontextualizes samples of musicologist (and master accordion player) Tony McMahon bemoaning “the future of Irish Traditional Music”.
