Luke and Frances built this beautiful shipping container tiny house using a single 40-foot-long shipping container. They built it on a small budget by sourcing most of the materials secondhand and by doing all the work themselves to keep the cost down. The container has doors at each end, so they took advantage of these openings to add sliding patio doors and a big picture window to bring in lots of natural light, and they intentionally kept the floor plan simple, aiming to create the feel of a studio apartment.
You can find out more about Frances and Luke's shipping container tiny home here:
https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/54391155
The house measures 8 feet wide x 40 feet long with a total square footage of 320. They have a bright living room at one end with a sofa bed and handmade wood furniture. In the middle of the house is the kitchen with a DIY concrete countertop and a breakfast bar overlooking the forest. The bathroom has tiled walls and a shower, as well as a reclaimed toilet and vanity. And at the far end of the container cabin is a bedroom with a queen size bed and a dresser for storage.
They bought the sea can used, and it already had spray foam insulation and a wood floor inside. They set it up on a foundation of patio stones and bolted a roof onto the top to create overhangs that would protect the house from rain and other elements.
In terms of systems, they have a well on the property, an above ground septic tank, a propane on demand hot water heater, electricity from the grid, and a mini-split in the bedroom that heats and cools the house (and is also an extraction fan). They added baseboard heaters in other rooms to keep them warm and cozy as well.
An important thing to consider when building a house inside a metal building envelope like a used steel shipping container is the potential for condensation which can create serious problems. The spray foam acts as both insulation and a vapour barrier, and they also use a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels down.
This is a stunning container conversion and an impressive project by Frances and Luke. We hope you enjoyed checking it out and you can find out more about their shipping container tiny house here: https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/54391155

This stunning little float home on the west coast has a red metal exterior and an incredible open concept interior design that you will fall in love with! It's a perfect tiny house on the water, and believe it or not, it used to be a boat shed...for storing boats!
You can find out more about the red float house here:
https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/27635041/gnbbh27-415-w-esplanade-north-vancouver
It was converted from a boat shed into a floating house by adding extra flotation in the middle of the structure and then adding an oak plank floor on top of that. Once the house had a foundation and a floor, then the living spaces were added one at a time, including a chef's kitchen with an island, a dining room with a live edge table, a spa-like bathroom with stone tile and a big bathtub, and then the piece de résistance is the living room with a view onto the ocean with french doors that open onto a floating deck, and a wood stove to stay cozy and warm inside during winter. Up a set of stairs/ladder is a loft bedroom with another amazing view of the water, and a storage nook with space to sleep an extra guest.
The house is floating on a combination of 3 types of flotation: PVC foam blocks around the perimeter, barrels filled with air in the middle, and extra barrels with valves on them that can be inflated and deflated by divers to level the house depending on where heavier items are located (like a bathtub or wood stove).
The house has moorage at a marina that accepts float homes, and it is connected to water and electricity via the marina. Marinas all have different rules, services, fees, and contract lengths so it's important to look into a marina before deciding if you want to be a liveaboard there.
The Red Float House was converted 15 years ago and was home for it's owner until 2019. She still uses it as a home base when she's in the city, but she has decided that it's time to move on and let someone new have the opportunity to try out living on the water!

Anders is living off-grid in a tiny house that he built on a budget, along with his sweet dog Borsimat.
He built the tiny home over 4 years ago with natural and sustainable materials, including untreated larch wood, recycled metal, wood fibre insulation, and secondhand windows. He has solar panels and batteries for his electricity, he collects rainwater from his roof for all his water needs (including showers), he heats the house with wood from his forest as well as with scrap wood purchased from a nearby mill, and he has a composting toilet in an outhouse to keep smells out of the house. He is also growing a lot of his own food in his permaculture gardens, including fruit, vegetables, and soon to be mushrooms. This type of self-reliant off-grid homestead lifestyle is a lot of work and there are constantly chores to do, but Anders really enjoys the benefits of spending more time in nature, living with fewer expenses, learning new skills, and having more time to spend with his family :)

This is a stunning park model tiny house on wheels that has everything from a kitchen with a a dining room, two main floor bedrooms, and a spacious living room, to a cozy bathroom, an epic laundry room and loads of storage! It's bigger than a typical tiny house, measuring 44' long, 12' wide, and 13'6" tall with everything on one floor (no loft, no ladder, no stairs!) and there are high ceilings and clerestory windows that make the living space feel open and airy.
This XL tiny home is the Orca model by Mint Tiny House Company, and in this video their creative marketing guru Farai gives us a full walk through tour to see each room, and he also shares details about how it's built and insulated, how it's heated and cooled, he talks about all the hookups, how much it costs, and more!
You can follow and find out more about Mint Tiny House Company here:

Some of the advantages of a park model tiny house like this is that it's longer and wider, so you don't get the hallway effect that some tiny homes have. There's also loads of storage space in the kitchen, bedrooms, and laundry room to help keep clutter to a minimum. Having a second bedroom means you have space for a home office, for guests, or for kids. And there's also room for a dining room which is something that a lot of tiny homes don't have (they often opt for a breakfast bar or a counter with stools).
Some of the disadvantages of a park model is that, due to their large size, they do require special permitting to transport on the road and likely need at least one pilot vehicle. They're also more expensive than a lot of tiny homes. The Orca model in this video costs $231,000 in Canadian Dollars.
Another key difference between a typical tiny house on wheels and a park model is that they are built to different standards and certifications, which is an important thing to look into when buying a tiny house and figuring out where to park it, as well as for financing, insurance and other important logistics.
We hope you enjoyed this park model tour!

Noah built this tiny house on wheels 4 years ago and it's been his home every since! It measures 10' x 20' with a total of just 200 square feet of interior living space so it's quite small, but his open concept design makes the space feel super functional and comfortable! Some other things he did to optimize his micro home include a main floor bedroom so that the ceilings are nice and high (no loft), and he also installed lots of windows and a skylight to bring in loads of natural light.
You can follow and find out more about Noah's tiny homes and saunas here:
https://www.instagram.com/leftcoast.tinyhomes/
https://www.leftcoastssi.com/
The tiny house has great storage in the entrance with space for coats and shoes, as well as a wardrobe closet for clothing. There's a dining nook with two stools next to the single wall kitchen that has a bar fridge, sink, and propane cooktop, as well as lots of storage for his pantry items and dishes. He also has a deep freezer outside for additional food storage.
There's an L-shaped bench sofa with integrated storage that creates a cozy living room, and a Queen-sized bed with even more storage underneath and a built-in night table.
The bathroom has a standard vanity and flush toilet, but the real show stopper is his cedar strip shower that adds a ton of warmth and character to the small washroom.
Noah used standing seam metal on the roof, cedar channel and cedar shake for the siding, and he insulated the tiny house with a mix of rock wool and rigid insulation.
To double the size of his living space, he added a big deck to the tiny house that's actually modular so he can take it apart if he needs to move. And he also integrated an outdoor bathtub into the deck so that he can enjoy a bath with a view!
After self-building and self-financing this tiny home project, Noah started building tiny homes for a living on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada and so far he's built 6 tiny homes in total! This one is called the Maxwell and it's the smallest of three models he builds. Another fun project he's started is building mobile saunas!

Jill and Charles have created a beautiful off-grid yurt homestead in Vermont, on a forested hillside, with solar power, rainwater collection and a rocket mass heater. But this project didn't come together overnight – it's the result of over 8 years of planning and working towards this dream of theirs!
You can follow and find out more about Jill and Charles's off-grid yurt homestead here:
https://www.youtube.com/@OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
It all started 8 years ago when they visited Vermont to look at properties and ended up buying a beautiful forested 20 acre piece of land. They went home to Dallas, Texas with a 5-year plan to save up enough money so that they could move onto the land in Vermont and create their off-grid homestead. The plan ended up being extended to 6 years with the purchase of 10 additional acres, but they eventually made it up there!
In the 2 years that they've been on the property, they lived in an RV at first (that was also off-grid with solar and rainwater), while they built their yurt home. The yurt is a 30-foot Pacific Yurt with modern materials (vinyl cover and reflectix insulation) that provides approximately 700 square feet of living space. They finished it inside with a kitchen and enclosed bathroom, and the rest is all open concept living space for the dining area, bedroom, office, and storage.
The yurt was meant to be a quick and affordable home to set up, but it ended up taking quite a lot longer than anticipated, especially because they had to build a post and beam platform and deck to create a flat area where the yurt could be put up, and install all their own systems for heat, rainwater collection, and solar power.
The cost was a lot more than just the cost of the yurt kit. They also had to factor in some big ticket items like the platform and deck, the SIP floor panels, the appliances, the solar and rainwater collection systems, and more!
Now that it's complete, the couple has a beautiful, cozy, round home in the woods where they can enjoy being immersed in the forest, and get to know their neighbours, the birds, bears, coyotes and bobcats. Their next steps include building a covered entrance to the yurt, and planting fruit trees :)

Earthships are one of the more beautiful, ambitious and labour-intensive types of alternative homes that we’ve seen people build. The goal with an Earthship is that the home would be completely self-sufficient in terms of its inputs and outputs. The concept and design came from Michael Reynolds, who is an architect in New Mexico.
They’re built using waste products like old tires, bottles and pop cans, and natural materials like dirt to minimize the need for new materials. And they’re designed to be heated and cooled using passive solar, to collect rainwater from the roof, to generate electricity from solar and wind, to grow food in indoor gardens, and to treat waste water on site. They’re incredibly impressive spaces and earthships have been built all over the world.
The waste materials used to build Earthships can be quite inexpensive, but the real expense comes in the form of land and especially labour, because they can take months and even years to build. We’ve seen a mix of “official” earthships that were built using plans from Michael Reynolds, and we’ve also seen DIY versions where people come up with their own designs. It does seem like it’s quite important to get the details right to ensure that the systems function the way they’re supposed to, so it’s probably worth it to purchase plans. And to make sure that the design is appropriate for the climate where it will be built, an energy modeler can help figure this out!

This beautiful 300 square foot tiny house is the perfect combination of three things: a super clever layout, lovingly hand-crafted details, and an uber cozy interior design. Some of the highlights include handmade wooden windows that add character and bring in loads of natural light, a downstairs bedroom that you can stand up in, a spacious wrap around kitchen for cooking and baking, loads of useful storage spaces throughout the house, and unique features like a round window, hand plastered walls with reclaimed wood touches, and more!

Starting off on the left side of the home, the floor plan has a u-shaped kitchen that provides lots of counter space for cooking and baking, and includes hand-built cabinets and drawers, hand made wooden windows, an off-grid propane stove, and a retro Unique fridge, as well as a countertop made from reclaimed oak banisters.
Next up, in the middle of the tiny home is a cozy living room space with a Morso wood stove, a compact vintage sofa and chair, a built-in bookcase, a true double hung window (made by hand as well!), a stunning 9-pane window with handmade wooden frame, and clerestory windows along the roofline to bring in natural light from above.
From the living room you go down a couple of stairs into a downstairs bedroom that has plenty of head room to stand up, and includes a Queen-size bed, multiple windows, a spacious closet, and a cozy home office nook. The extra head space was gained by removing some of the floor joists that came pre-installed on the trailer, and counter sinking floor joists onto the bottom of the trailer to create a 17" dip in the floor.
Going up a few stairs brings you to the guest room or kids room above the main bedroom, and this little space has it's own single bed and closet, along with extra storage space under the bed.
And finally, at the end of the hallway is an intricately tiled bathroom with a sink and vanity, space for a composting toilet, a shower with built-in extraction fan, and a propane instant hot water heater. Not to mention some small storage cubbies and of course more lovely hand-built windows.
The tiny house on wheels is built on a 26-foot long, 2-axle trailer and has a space near the hitch for propane tanks, and to connect the water hose and drain. The home includes a bump out that brings the total length to 30 feet long and 8.5 feet wide.
It is wired for 50 amps, and also has a separate 20 amp breaker that would allow you to provide electricity to an outbuilding like a shed or a shop. It is insulated with rockwool and has electric baseboards in each room for better temperature control, and to keep the house above freezing when it isn't occupied.
The exterior of the house has a band of cedar shingles around the bottom, and the top half of the house and the roof are clad in metal to keep out the rain (the house is on the West Coast of Canada after all!).

Amber has been living in her tiny house for 4 years and has no regrets about downsizing to a smaller home on wheels! To start, she did a ton of research and then worked with a builder to bring her vision to life by customizing one of their standard floor plans. She is parked in a beautiful forested area that has a well and electricity, and space for her two small dogs to run around.
You can follow and find out more about Amber here:
https://www.instagram.com/ambernaturally/
https://www.adaptdaily.ca/
The tiny house has a beautiful and functional kitchen because Amber cooks 90% of her own meals (she works as a nutritionist and develops her own recipes), a cozy living room with a fireplace, a home office nook, and a big bathroom that has both a bathtub and a shower, a stacked washer dryer, and a closet. On one side of the tiny house, there is a storage staircase that leads up to her main loft bedroom. And on the other side of the tiny house there is a ladder that leads up to a guest loft.
In feet, the tiny house measures 34 feet long x 8.5 feet wide, and with the two lofts it is 413 square feet.
In meters, the tiny house measures 10 meters long x 2.6 meters wide, and with the two lofts it is 38 square meters.
The tiny house cost $169,000 CAD including lots of extras, and some of Amber's tiny house expenses include her mortgage, a monthly pad fee, propane, and electrical (hydro). While the tiny house is perfect for her, there are some things she would change if she had to do it all over again. For example, she would add built-in ceiling fans to keep warm air circulating, and radiant in-floor heating to keep the floor warmer.
