350 million years ago, long before the dinosaur era, planet Earth was a very different place. Endless tropical swamps teeming with towering ferns, intense humidity, and an high oxygen level in the air created ideal conditions for flourishing life; though not the kind we know today. The Carboniferous Period was a strange, otherworldly era dominated by giant insects.
Everpresent swampy tropical forests absorbed carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and released immense amounts of oxygen into the atmosphere. This raised the oxygen level to a record 35% - more than one and a half times the safe level for humans.
Such high oxygen levels became a powerful energy source for living organisms in this primeval jungle world. It was the perfect time for early vertebrates that were beginning to evolve but haven’t quite adapted to life on land, as well as various invertebrates that grew to astonishing sizes.
It was a time of aggressive centipedes as long as a car, dragonflies soaring through the sky that resembled modern hawks, and giant spiders and scorpions the size of a bull terrier, dominating the swampy jungles. The Carboniferous was an epoch when giant insects ruled the planet, transforming it into your worst nightmare.

Is There Life on Jupiter's Moon? NASA Sends Probe to Search for Life on Europa

In March 1979, two NASA space probes, Voyager-1 and Voyager-2, moved along a trajectory near one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa, as part of the solar system exploration program. At a distance of 118,000 miles (190,000 km) from the moon's surface, Voyager-2 took a number of high-quality images and conducted measurements that led scientists to hypothesize the existence of a liquid ocean beneath the thick ice shell of the moon.
All subsequent research, including the data collected by the Galileo space probe in the late 1990s while studying Europa at the height of 124 miles (200 km) above the surface, only confirmed the existence of a liquid water ocean beneath the ice, which is between 6-18 miles (10-30 km) thick.
Soon, thanks to the space probes studying Europa, scientists were able to discover something that gave them solid grounds to suggest that life might exist on this moon.
On October 14, 2024, NASA launched the interplanetary mission Europa Clipper. This spacecraft is set to travel to Jupiter’s moon and conduct detailed studies of its surface and sub-surface ocean. This is NASA’s most expensive planetary mission in history, the largest space probe ever designed for studying a planetary body, and the most ambitious mission in the search for extraterrestrial life in human history. What's Hidden Under the Ice of Antarctica?

In 1964, a team of Russian researchers led by Andrey Kapitsa from Moscow State University, conducted a seismic experiment in the eastern part of Antarctica, near the Vostok research station. They measured the thickness of ice in this region, unaware that there was something far more valuable and revolutionary that they were missing, right beneath their feet at a depth of 2.5 miles (4 km).

By 1973, a new expedition of researchers from the US, the UK, and Denmark ventured to study the same location. This time, they made an incredible discovery that initially seemed impossible. What they found beneath the ice became one of the biggest geographical sensations of the second half of the 20th century! They uncovered one of the largest freshwater subglacial lakes on the planet, which had been completely isolated from the rest of the world for millions of years.

It was named after the Vostok station and became the subject of extensive research, seeing how the things it might conceal could potentially change our understanding of how, in what kinds of conditions, life can arise and evolve; not only on our planet but potentially on others as well.

Largest Creatures To Ever Exist On Earth: Monsters of the Ocean

This stunning mountain range stretching across North America is rightfully considered one of the most scenic places in the U.S. Hard to believe that at some point this area was covered by a sea, home to a vast number of underwater giants—true monsters for whom any marine predator alive today would have been easy prey.

That sea was named the Western Interior Seaway, and 80 million years ago, it divided what later became North America into two parts: Laramidia in the west and Appalachia in the east. At its greatest size, it was 2,500 feet (760 meters) deep, 600 miles (970 kilometers) wide, and over 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) long.

These ancient waters were ruled by giant reptiles up to 50 feet (15 meters) in length, the apex of the food chain of their time. Giant turtles, as large as modern SUVs, and colossal predatory fish up to 20 feet (6 meters) long, capable of swallowing human-sized prey whole. Some creatures were so powerful that they could easily crush a car with their jaws. But the most iconic figure of this ancient sea was the ultimate predator, the deadliest and most invincible underwater inhabitant of all time.

The Western Interior Seaway was home to everything terrifying and gigantic that you can, and cannot, imagine.
