I heard somewhere that it’s easier to think of who to call when you’re in a low spot, harder to think of who to call when you have good news. The people that we imagine ourselves really celebrating something meaningful with can dwindle down to a selected few, or maybe just one.

I feel so grateful and lucky to call Vivi a friend. Growing up, we used to make paper stars for each other, sometimes scribbling notes inside of them. There was something about the repetition of the folds, the texture of the paper, and the act of going to the mall to get a new pack of paper stars that carved out a special place in my heart.

Existing on this planet can feel so dizzying, but over the years and through many phases, it’s friendships like these that remind me of the good in the world.

Whoever it is that you want to call when you get good news, this one’s for them.

When I heard this track off of Mac DeMarco's new album (5 easy hot dogs) and read the title, It set off so many memories of places I could trace back to growing up in Edmonton:

The nothingness that sets itself neatly between the neighbourhoods, the torturously long bus rides to get to Whyte avenue from the Northside just to sit and read a book somewhere pretty as a teenager. When I got my first car, the Henday became a close friend of sorts. I’d drive on it after work, on a good day, on a bad day and roam in circles asking myself if I felt like going east, west, north or south, only to end up at home, playing guitar in the basement. A part of me never left that place.
