When the Germans made the V-1 flying bomb, little did they know that within just a couple of months of their first use, the U.S would have a copy ready to go and if it weren't for the issue of shipping thousands of them taking up valuable space on the convoys they could have been used in Europe against Germany. In 1965 the most powerful Solid Rocket Motor ever built was created by Aerojet and tested by NASA as a backup to the F-1 engine for the Saturn V. It had a thrust 3.5 times that of the F-1 and yet it was never used, but it's successor nearly 20 years later provided 85% of the thrust for the space shuttle.
