President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hit back at Donald Trump’s misleading remarks about the Ukrainian leader’s approval rating and suggestions that Kyiv started the war, accusing the US president of living in a Russian “disinformation space.”
Tension escalated a day after senior officials from the US and Russia met for a first round of talks over the war in Ukraine, leaving Zelenskiy isolated and compounding fears that a deal to resolve the war will be reached without Kyiv’s involvement.
Trump followed up on Tuesday, telling reporters he would “probably” meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the end of the month. The president asserted that Zelenskiy’s public support was at 4% — a level belied by all available polling — and mentioned that wartime Ukraine hasn’t staged an election, a demand that’s been made by the Kremlin.
“We’ve seen this disinformation. We understand that it comes from Russia,” Zelenskiy told reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday, responding to Trump’s claims about his popularity. “We have proof that these numbers are being discussed between the US and Russia.”

Donald Trump pushed back Tuesday against Ukraine's objections to being excluded from talks between the U.S. and Russia in Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the war in eastern Ukraine.
He also seemed to suggest that Ukraine was to blame for a war that began only after Russia invaded that country.
Speaking to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump said, "Today I heard, well, we weren't invited. Well, you've been there for three years. You should have ended it three years. You should have never started it."
Trump didn't mention that Russia has also failed to end the war it began when it invaded its neighbor.
"A half-baked negotiator could have settled this years ago without the loss of much land, very little land, without the loss of any lives," Trump said, echoing his frequent claim that he could have prevented the Russian invasion.
Trump said he thought he had a “good chance” to end Russia’s war in Ukraine but bristled at suggestions that the U.S. and Russia had begun negotiations to end fighting occurring without Ukraine playing a role.

Pope Francis’s health conditions are worsening as the pontiff remains in hospital indefinitely being treated for pneumonia in what the Vatican described as a “complex picture.”
The 88-year old pontiff underwent additional exams on Tuesday, with a chest CT scan showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which required further drug therapy, the Vatican said in a statement.
Pope Francis was hospitalized in Rome on Friday, and his doctors have changed drugs to treat his respiratory tract infection. He received the Eucharist on Tuesday morning and asked for continued prayers, the Vatican said.

A federal judge denied a request to temporarily bar Elon Musk and the Trump administration’s “government efficiency” team from accessing internal systems and removing employees at multiple US agencies, handing a win to President Donald Trump over one of his signature initiatives.
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington on Tuesday rejected a bid for immediate court intervention from Democratic state attorneys general who contend Musk is exercising power to reshape the US government that is supposed to be reserved only for high-level, Senate-confirmed officials.
Chutkan explained that the states hadn’t shown that they would suffer “imminent, irreparable harm” while the case moves forward, adding that media reports about actions by Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency weren’t enough to base an order on. But she also said that it appeared the states had raised a valid claim “with serious implications” about Musk’s role in the administration.

Top officials from the US and Russia met for a first round of talks over the war in Ukraine and raised the possibility of broader cooperation, signaling President Donald Trump desire to reboot a battered relationship.
The two sides ended more than four hours of negotiations in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday with a pledge to appoint high-level teams to work toward ending the conflict “as soon as possible in a way that is enduring, sustainable and acceptable to all sides,” the US State Department said.

A bipartisan group of US senators led by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) held a news conference on Monday to discuss their visit to Israel.
The Congressional delegation - the first to travel to Israel since President Donald Trump took office in January - held a number of meetings with Israeli government officials.
Senator Graham told reporters that the Trump administration would soon have to make a decision on how to deal with Iran's nuclear program.
He said there were two choices - a military path where the US helps Israel deliver a decisive blow against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, or to decide to negotiate with Iran, to try to get them to abandon their nuclear ambitions.

Elon Musk — whose name has become nearly synonymous with the cost-cutting mission of the newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency” — doesn’t actually work for it, the White House said.
Instead, Musk is a senior adviser to the president and “has no greater authority than other senior White House advisers,” said Joshua Fisher, the director of the White House Office of Administration.
Fisher argued late Monday that Musk’s role is separate from the agency he champions, known as DOGE.
The distinction has legal and practical implications. As a direct adviser to the president in the White House Office, Musk’s advice would likely be shielded by executive privilege. And unlike the Office of Management and Budget, the part of the president’s office where DOGE resides, the White House Office is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
Fisher’s description of Musk’s role came in a sworn statement submitted by the government in a case brought last week by the state of New Mexico and 13 other Democratic attorneys general, claiming that Musk has exceeded his authority because he’s not a Senate-confirmed officer of the government.

Negotiations to end Russia's war in Ukraine shouldn't take place "behind the backs of" the parties involved, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday, shortly after officials from Russia and the U.S. announced plans to work together to end the conflict.
"It is critical that any negotiations to end the war are not happening behind the backs of the key parties affected by the Russian aggression," Zelenskyy said at a briefing in Ankara alongside Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Russia and the U.S. agreed to start working towards ending the war in Ukraine and improving their diplomatic and economic ties, America's top diplomat said after talks that reflected an extraordinary about-face in U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump.
